Nine months have passed since Anne Kneiland was killed but Muncie cannot touch prime suspect Manuel when his father gives him an alibi. Days later Marion Watt, her daughter Vivienne and her sister are all shot dead in their beds and Marion's husband Bill, who argued with Vivienne, is arrested. Muncie believes they were a tragic case of mistaken identity, killed by Manuel, who was hoping to target another family, and he is even more convinced when Manuel tells Bill's solicitor Laurence Dowdall that the real killer was a local crime boss - though it does lead to Bill's release. At Christmas Manuel is enraged when his sister Theresa accuses him of stealing the presents he gives to the family and he storms out. In court, it is the day that Anna has been waiting for, when the man she believes killed her son takes the stand and has to face the world. Back in the past, living under the suspicion that he is a child killer is taking its toll on Craig and he fears for his daughter's safety, while cracks widen in his relationship with his wife Rebecca. In Edinburgh Adam Elliott and his wife Grace are murdered for money by a drug-addicted thief. Adam's siblings Claire and Rob return to the rural community where their mother Louise lives, to comfort her and Grace's parents Moira and Bill though Louise is resistant to ex-husband Peter arriving. During a storm the two families help a car crash victim but realize that he is the murderer so they imprison him. Next morning he is found dead with Moira believing that either Rob or her son Jamie killed him.
